The IPCCs global emission pathways presuppose an enormous increase in biomass use if we are to reach net zero emissions in 2050. Today land crops are traded in international markets and utilized for electricity generation or turned into biofuels. We are now seeing a growing awareness of the risks. Considerable efforts are required to solve the challenges related to large-scale, sustainable biomass production.

With this seminar we wish, in turn, to expand our perspectives on biomass. What if the solutions we need are to be found in the ocean? How can seaweed cultivation help relieve pressures on terrestrial ecosystems, while safeguarding the marine environment? Can jet fuels based on macroalgae help decarbonize aviation? And not least: Can Norway and the Nordics take the lead in establishing large-scale production?

To discuss these topics we have invited experts from the Nordic Initiative for Sustainable Aviation (NISA), the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), Seaweed Energy Solutions (SES) and SINTEF Industry.
